Anything sitting on the surface is right in the light path.<\/p><\/div>\n      <div class=\"step reveal\"><div class=\"num\">02<\/div><h3>Position it on the cartridge<\/h3><p>Lay the filter on top of a fresh Polaroid 600 cartridge with the <b>cut corners at the top<\/b>. A loose filter is shown alongside for comparison.<\/p>\n        <div class=\"warn\"><b>Keep it flat.<\/b> A filter with a fold or a bubble in it can catch as the film ejects. If it isn&#8217;t sitting flush, peel the tape and re\u2011seat it \u2014 the gel is tougher than it looks.<\/div>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<!-- THE DIAL -->\n<section class=\"section\" style=\"background:#fff\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">\n    <div class=\"sec-head center reveal\">\n      <span class=\"eyebrow\">The one thing people get wrong<\/span>\n      <h2>Which way to turn the exposure dial.<\/h2>\n      <p class=\"lede\">This is the most common source of confusion, because the two products want <b>opposite<\/b> settings. It&#8217;s worth thirty seconds of reading.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"dial\">\n      <div class=\"dialcard reveal\" style=\"--c:var(--red);--c-text:var(--red-text);--c-ink:#fff\">\n        <span class=\"chip\">ND &amp; Extra Bright ND<\/span>\n        <h3>Leave the dial centered.<\/h3>\n        <p>The whole job of an ND filter is to correct the exposure for you \u2014 it cuts the light so 600 film behaves like the ISO 160 film your SX\u201170 expects. If you also crank the dial down, you&#8217;ll end up underexposed and muddy.<\/p>\n        <span class=\"big\">Dial \u2192 center<\/span>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class=\"dialcard reveal\" style=\"--c:var(--blue);--c-text:var(--blue-text);--c-ink:#16161A\">\n        <span class=\"chip\">Duochrome<\/span>\n        <h3>Turn the dial towards brighter.<\/h3>\n        <p>Color gels absorb light as a side effect of shifting the color, so you need to give some back. Darker shades \u2014 Dark Blue, Magenta, Primary Red \u2014 want bright daylight or a flash to really sing.<\/p>\n        <span class=\"big\">Dial \u2192 brighter<\/span>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"warn\" style=\"max-width:820px;margin-inline:auto\"><b>Using an ND and a Duochrome together?<\/b> Don&#8217;t. The combined light loss varies by filter and shade, and 600 film has nowhere near enough latitude for it. Use one filter per pack.<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<!-- TROUBLESHOOTING -->\n<section class=\"section\" id=\"troubleshooting\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">\n    <div class=\"sec-head center reveal\">\n      <span class=\"eyebrow\">If something looks off<\/span>\n      <h2>Troubleshooting.<\/h2>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"faq\">\n      <details class=\"qa reveal\" open><summary>Shots are still too bright<span class=\"ic\">+<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"ans\">Check you&#8217;re using the full\u2011strength <b>ND filter<\/b> (.6ND) rather than the Extra Bright (.3ND) \u2014 the Extra Bright only cuts one stop and is meant for indoor use. Also check the filter is flat and correctly positioned, and that you&#8217;re loading Polaroid 600 film. Leave the dial centered; if shots are still too bright, send us a sample and your camera model.<\/div><\/details>\n      <details class=\"qa reveal\"><summary>Shots are coming out too dark indoors<span class=\"ic\">+<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"ans\">That&#8217;s exactly what the <b>Extra Bright ND<\/b> is for \u2014 it gives you back a stop compared to the standard filter. Failing that, use a flash bar. Indoor light is far dimmer than your eyes suggest.<\/div><\/details>\n      <details class=\"qa reveal\"><summary>My Duochrome shots are very dark<span class=\"ic\">+<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"ans\">Turn the exposure dial towards <b>brighter<\/b>, and use the darker shades in strong light. Dark Blue, Magenta and Primary Red all soak up a lot of light \u2014 they&#8217;re daylight-and-flash colors rather than indoor ones.<\/div><\/details>\n      <details class=\"qa reveal\"><summary>There are faint marks on the filter<span class=\"ic\">+<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"ans\">Normal, and harmless. Light surface marks are expected on photo studio gel stock. The filter sits well away from the film surface, so they don&#8217;t register on the photo.<\/div><\/details>\n      <details class=\"qa reveal\"><summary>The film is jamming or ejecting oddly<span class=\"ic\">+<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"ans\">Almost always a seating problem. Take the pack out and check the filter is flat, that no tape is over the cartridge&#8217;s cut\u2011outs, and that nothing is blocking the rollers. Re\u2011seat and try again.<\/div><\/details>\n      <details class=\"qa reveal\"><summary>Can I move it to another pack?<span class=\"ic\">+<\/span><\/summary><div class=\"ans\">Yes \u2014 that&#8217;s the point. Peel the tape, lift the filter off, and fit it to the next pack. There&#8217;s no adhesive on the filter itself, so it can be reused many times over.
